Student Internship and
Co-op Program

Carpenter Technology offers college internship and co-op opportunities that help students apply what they've learned in school to real-life work experiences. Students will develop their technical skills and learn about what it is like to work within their chosen field of study.

Carpenter Technology is large enough to provide you with professional growth and small enough to recognize and appreciate your personal contributions. The friendly work environment and close-knit relationships with co-workers will guide you on your journey to the career you've always wanted.

Example Opportunities

Electrical Maintenance

Having a world class maintenance department has been vital to Carpenter's success. Well maintained equipment and processes positively impact safety, quality, reliability, productivity, efficiency, and cost. It is extremely important that our personnel maintain and improve existing equipment and facilities. They must also work with production and engineering teams to install new machines and implement the latest technology to ensure that we can reliably deliver the highest quality materials to our customers.Intern/co-op students will have the opportunity to learn proper safety and maintenance procedures from our experienced craftsmen in a diverse industrial setting.

Typical tasks will include:

  • Learning and implementing Carpenter's safety procedures
  • Performing preventative maintenance procedures and calibrations
  • Participating in continuous improvement projects
  • Learning efficient troubleshooting techniques
  • Assisting in equipment installations and modifications
Specific Requirements: Enrollment in an electrical technology associate program or equivalent training program.

Engineering

Carpenter's manufacturing processes require hundreds of pieces of equipment that will perform electro-mechanical systems processes such as melting, casting, forging, rolling and finishing. The design of these systems includes the application of mechanical and electrical engineering principles that operate as a system.

Intern/co-op students will be assigned projects on many of these processes. Students will start by assisting design and project engineers. A significant amount of time will be spent working in the mill environment.

Students could be expected to:

  • Interact with production supervisors, equipment operators, and maintenance personnel to define project requirements
  • Prepare Process Operating Descriptions
  • Apply electric motor drive systems
  • Work with Manufacturing to reduce process variation
  • Apply mechanical and electrical engineering principles
  • Address Environmental Health and Safety issues and processes
  • Design or modify plant utility systems (i.e. electric power distribution, compressed air

  • Prepare information for the installation and/or modification of process equipment
  • Start-up new and modified process equipment
  • Program programmable controllers, PCs, instruments, etc.
  • Train operators and maintenance personnel
  • Produce operator and maintenance manuals and final drawings
  • Estimate project costs
  • Use data collection and test equipment
  • Collect and analyze process data
Specific Requirements: Majors in Electrical Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, or Electro-Mechanical Engineering.

Research and Development

Carpenter customers generally agree that one of the company’s greatest strengths is its technical services. The responsibilities involved in research and development include: ensuring that manufacturing specifications are being met in the mill, solving technical problems for customers, and assisting customers in selecting the products that best suit their needs. Intern/co-op students will gain exposure while interacting with manufacturing and research personnel on a daily basis. They will also learn to work in a team environment while using their materials and problem-solving skills.

Typical tasks will include:

  • Observing processes
  • Evaluating products
  • Collecting and analyzing data
  • Implementing product or process changes
Specific requirements: Majors in Metallurgical Engineering or Materials Science
